COULD A US PRESIDENT
SERVE BEYOND TWO TERMS
The USA Constitution of
1789, along with the Bill of Rights of 1791, originally stated there
were no term limits for the Presidency of the USA. President Roosevelt
is the only president to hold four terms of office, as there was no law
at that time preventing it. His additional terms were widely seen as the
most stable solution during the Great Depression and World War II.
The 22nd Amendment to the
US constitution limiting presidents to two terms was proposed in1947 and
became law in 1951. It became part of the Constitution. While it is
legally possible to change it by using a new amendment, there is
currently no simple pathway to do so. However variables could occur. It
is only early 2026, which gives nearly 3 years until 7th November 2028
when an election is due. We really have no idea of what is ahead or what
will or won’t change the circumstances of the USA. However, I think most
of us are sure the future of politics is going to change enormously, for
the better welfare of the USA and indeed for the world
Here are
possible occurrences, some unlikely, that could extend a presidential
term.
1. There might
be so much change occurring in the next couple of years that could
render the current system of even having a President as obsolete.
Perhaps favouring newly constructed smaller communities across the
nation, consisting of local residents.
2. The US Army
could publicly take over under military law.
3. A massive
reveal of information offering indisputable proof could be given to the
USA public, showing a long history of rigged elections, corrupt congress
and many states of the USA. This could cause demand for a complete
change of the entire USA political system.
4. Congress could
initiate a repeal or replacement of the 22nd Amendment through the
constitutional amendment process and passed by a required number of US
states. In such a case, the people themselves could then decide what
sort of system they wanted for their future, which is exactly where the
power should be anyway, with ‘We, the People’. That would indeed be a
responsibility, but with the world awakening in this time frame, it
could be upheld with truth and honour, encouraging harmony and peace as
we move forward.
5. If two thirds of US
states requested a convention under Article V, the Constitution itself
could be reconsidered or rewritten. All existing amendments, including
the 22nd, would technically be open to alteration or replacement.
6. A federal election could be postponed due to a nationwide emergency.
While this would not legally extend a presidential term under the
Constitution as it stands, it could trigger legal disputes over
continuity of the presidency. At the same time, there could be a legal
reinterpretation of the 22nd Amendment rather than its repeal, with the
Supreme Court being asked to redefine the scope of the word ‘term’ under
unusual circumstances. There could also be changes at the state level,
such as widespread refusal by states to participate in federal election
processes, or there may be coordinated constitutional challenges by
multiple states. These could indirectly extend a presidency while new
arrangements were argued in court and Congress. This could mean the
existing constitutional order is deemed non-functional by consensus
rather than by law, allowing continuity of leadership to be justified
politically in a transition period, as has occurred historically in many
nations.
7. The majority of the
USA population could simply demand it.
Whatever is ahead, rest
assured it will be in perfect divine order for the greater good of
humanity.
Love,
Sandy Stevenson
